Don Tyler, 63, passed away on May 17, 2019. Don was the son of Charles and Claire Tyler of Palo Alto, and the brother to Charles II, Janet, and James, all of whom were raised in Palo Alto. Don's father Charley was the publisher of the now-defunct Palo Alto Times. Don graduated from San Jose State University and had a long career in Marketing in Silicon Valley. He enjoyed fishing, sports, progressive rock, and travel and was working on his second volume of speculative fiction. He is survived by his two children, Maia and Liam of Mountain View, his siblings and nieces and nephews, and many dear friends from 'the old days'.

Don Tyler was brilliant, creative, witty, passionate about jazz and rock music, enjoyed reading science fiction and watching Star Trek (with Captain Kirk, Spock, Dr. Bones, and Scotty), and enjoyed late night discussions about the latest Yes, Who, Jethro Tull albums with his circle of friends!   He was a saxaphone player in the Paly Jazz Band.  My Mom was thrilled when Don and I started dating because she knew his Mom (Claire) and Uncle (Walter) from when they attending Paly High in the 1940's!  It was always such a treat to get invited over to dinner at his house on Jefferson because his family had such interesting discussions at dinner!  Senior year, Don was my date for the Paly Christmas Formal and Senior Spring Dance and Class of 73 Graduation Party!  I fondly remember many dinner dates in his black Buick driving to the Palo Alto Jack in the Box (El Camino near College Avenue) to order cheesburgers, taco's, fries, and cokes and then driving over to California Avenue and Park to sit by the fountain and eat!  After graduation, Don attended UCLA and San Jose State University where he studied Advertising.  At one point in college, he and Paly classmate, Ross Mehan, shared a cool "bachelor" apartment on Alma in Palo Alto!  We attended ever so many rock concerts back in those days!  Don stayed in the Bay Area and enjoyed a career as a Corporate Marketing and Communications and Creative Services Director for some major Silicon Valley high tech companies.  Recently he had left corporate life to pursue his dream of writing science fiction books.  At the end, after numerous hospital visits...there was confusion about his diagnosis, but cancer of the liver won...  Rest In Peace, Don.  With love, Vicky

I did not know Don well, but we both played saxophone in the school band so we saw each other on a regular basis.  He seemed like a nice person.  Sorry to learn of his passing.

Thank you, Victoria and Zach for your kind comments.  Don and I started our acquaintance in Kindergarten at Green Gables School.  I recall we were in the same Cub Scout den.  I remember there was a loosely associated friendship over the years that included Don, Bob Menker, Ross Mehan, Peter Mc Allester, and sometimes me.  I even recall stopping by the bachelor pad on Alma to see Ross and Don.  Rest In Peace Don.
