In Memory

John Morrow

I'm very sad to announce that John Morrow died peacefully at home on 19 December. His music at the reunions was just perfect.  Back in 2018 I traveled to Auburn and Grass Valley to hear him play at both the Red Frog and Holbrooke Inns.  He was just fabulous -- great times.  His voice singing Bob Dylan's "Knock-knock-knockin' on heaven's door" is ringing in my ears.  No doubt the door has opened for you John -- RIP.

John's Facebook page (Johnny2Morrow) states that a celebration of life being planned for Saturday, 21 May 2022.  See the page for further details.  I'm sure there will be plenty of music and good memories to share.

John was a great guy. I ended up working with him at two companies: Northern California Savings, and then ISC Systems, and continued to stay in touch. I remember his band playing in my back yard for a party back in the day also. The cops shut it down, even though I had permission from all the neighbors. We talked the cops into letting the band play one more song. So they played a 45 minute version of Tell Me All The Things You Do by Fleetwood Mac. Rock On, John!

I remember John as always being friendly and happy.  Always loved a song.  He was always ready to jam with anybody who could hold a beat.  That wasn't me, but I do remember John and Paul McArdle beating and strumming.  RIP John, may your music play on forever.

I'm thankful to John for reconnecting us in 2019, conscripting me to drum with the band he organized at the 2019 Reunion. I'd missed earlier Reunions and didn't realize we had 5 classmates, all as currently working musicians. With John fronting and singing, it was both a lot of fun, a bit surreal and I dare say we sounded pretty good!  What a great addition to the gathering. A couple months earlier, John had arranged a rehearsal at my house for a club date at a place he'd played while living in Los Gatos years back. Sunny, his wonderful young son, played rock-solid bass at both events and for years with John in the Grass Valley area. Very sweet seeing the 2 of them playing and interacting. It was clear John had been a kind and supportive father to his 2 boys. He also kept up with a couple of dinners while having treatments at Stanford. Sunny would accompany him on these trips, again showing the bond between the 2 of them. He randomly called to stay in touch, talk about things, he loved to reminisce about our upbringing in PA and, of course, music and being in bands. It is a common bond and was on full display the summer of 2019 amongst all of John's bandmates and classmates. I'll forever be thankful that he created that for us all. He remained a kind, calm, caring, musical guy all of his years. I'm glad That I got to share in that again later in our lives. He'll be missed.

I am almost in tears, and my heart is filled with sorrow.

Just now, my grapevine caught up with me 40days later.

John was a fabulous guy, man, husband, father and friend.

We started to hang spring 1973, then off and on through 1975.

Have some very fun, still to this day classic youthful lore stories

we discussed even as of 8 months ago approx.

John and I after 10+ yrs of no contact, started to converse again around 15yrs ago, Gotta love the new communication technology to find people and email talk :----) We did this approx

once a quarter, few times a year. Once about 10yrs ago, I was to meet

a buddy coming through San Francisco area, at a hotel bar near the SF airport..

I was sitting on a bar stool at the bar  by myself, about 15 minutes early. Some burly guy,

with a Lumber Jack style winter jacket, long hair, in a almost empty bar, sits right next to me.

I thought, lordy, either I am in his normal seat or is a wacko gonna talk to me.

"Dave" he says laughing. And it was John, coming though town himself for a visit to

his company Oracle. He was staying at the hotel, just getting a pop/drink on a tuesday early evening.

Am going to miss those emails and contacts from a guy I knew 30+ years.

With love, fun memories, but another part of my BITD life events with someone to converse, gone.....

Oh, man,

Another star in our firmament blinking out for a sec, and then coming back strong in a rush of memory and eternity,...

John was great to play music with at the reunnions. A great memory for songs, and good for bass players like me who can't remember a song worth beans. i wish I had got to play with him at Paly and Jordan.

A genuine person, and if we had to fight a war like our previous generations, he would have been a great team player, and a hero there, too.

I will say that I look forward to greeting him in the future. Hopefully we will both have wings in the back, and our guitars at hand.

Hey John, What key is "Don't Think Twice" ?

I never knew John too well when we were at Paly, but I did visit with him a bit at the last reunion and met his son.  What a contribution he was with his music!  The sound that came from all of you playing in the band at the last reunion sounded world class and I left that night thinking that band could go on for ever as you came together for other reunions.  I'm just reminded how the Paly experience would not be the same without each and every one of you.  Even though I didn't really know John too well I interacted with others who did, and somehow we all made a difference for each other.  I can appreciate that now in a way I never could have back when I was in high school. John left us way too early.  To those who knew him well, my deepest sympathy.
